After a 13-year wait, Getafe CF fans could celebrate a victory over Atlético de Madrid once again this past weekend. José Bordalás’ side defeated Diego Simeone’s men 2-1 at the Coliseum, thanks to two late Mauro Arambarri goals, handing neighboursinian coach his first loss against Los Azulones since taking over as Atlético de Madrid coach.
This duel in the south of Madrid was a big Matchday 27 clash in LALIGA EA SPORTS, and it proved to be historic. For Getafe CF, the three points allow them to move further away from the relegation zone and closer to the European qualification positions, while it was a big blow for Atleti as they fall to third place in the standings.
An even game with a wild ending
It was a very even match throughout, with both teams playing well-organised football. This limited chances, as both teams defended well and in numbers. For a while, it looked like this game might even finish 0-0.
That all changed with 15 minutes remaining on the clock, when Atlético de Madrid were awarded a penalty, which was converted by Alexander Sørloth. Yet, the home team didn’t give up. They kept fighting and made the most of an Ángel Correa red card to equalise in the 88th minute when Mauro Arambarri pounced to fire past Jan Oblak.
The Getafe CF faithful believed that the team could grab another, and they sure did. In the 92nd minute of the game, Diego Rico put a ball into the area and it was Mauro Arambarri again who converted to complete a remarkable and quick turnaround. That meant all three points were staying in the Coliseum, where the crowd was euphoric. It was an important victory for the now and also considering this was Getafe CF’s first victory over their capital city neighbours in over 13 years, since November of 2011.
