Matchday 28 of Liga BBVA was full of action: FC Barcelona, Sevilla FC, Athletic Club and Rayo Vallecano are just some who stood out on a collective level. On an individual scale, Vitolo celebrated his Spain call up by scoring and Fernando Torres scored his first Liga goal since rejoining.
Vitolo celebrates his call up
Sevilla downed Villarreal (0-2) at El Madrigal, in a repeat of the UEFA Europa League last 16 tie. Unai Emery’s men were once again the victors, thanks in part to Vitolo, who scored again to make it three in his last three. The striker is in top form, and backed up Vicente del Bosque’s show of faith after the Canary Islander was named in his latest Spain squad.
Barcelona remain in top spot
Barcelona - Real Madrid (2-1) was one of the games of the weekend. The Culés were able to extend their lead over the Merengues by four points at the top of the table. Luis Enrique’s side won thanks to a Luis Suárez strike in minute 56, and now will look to remain in pole position with 10 games to be played in Liga BBVA.
Winning streaks
Athletic, who secured a 2-1 win over UD Almería, have now won five on the bounce in the league. The Basque outfit have therefore achieved something they last attained in 1984-85, when Javier Clemente’s side racked up five on the spin.
Rayo Vallecano are another side looking strong. The Madrid outfit downed Málaga CF 1-0 to make it four wins in a row at home. Paco Jémez’s side are now sitting 11th in the table with 35 points.
Fernando Torres back on the scoresheet in La Liga
Atlético de Madrid recorded a 2-0 win over Getafe CF, and for the first time in eight years Fernando Torres was back on the scoresheet in the league for the Rojiblancos. The Madrid-born forward’s last goal before Saturday’s stunning header came in the 2006-07 campaign against Nástic de Tarragona.
