This video illustrates how recoveries can be distinguished not only in terms of their effectiveness, but also their quality. Barcelona record the fourth-most advantageous recoveries in the league, i.e. situations that involve a numerical advantage and where the side in possession has more players ahead of the ball than the opposition.
Given the importance of build-up play in the system deployed by Xavi’s troops, the team’s set-up at the start of the attacking transition is key. This video shows how the Barcelona players react in these situations. It’s worth pointing out that 15% of the Catalan giants’ recoveries put them at an advantage.
Real Madrid are the LaLiga Santander front runners for the number of carries leading to shots, with four per game to their name. Carries can be analysed from a whole host of angles, but in this case we’re keen to look at their outcome, i.e. shots.
There’s no question that Ancelotti’s charges are capable of making the most of these actions, as illustrated in our Clip of the Week. The players’ ability to go past their man, their skill level and decision-making ability are key to the success of such actions, which can reap rich rewards for the capital club.
As we can see in this clip, Simeone’s boys post an average of two carries that lead to shots per game. Indeed, this is one of Atleti’s favourite tactics to pose a threat on goal. If we dive deeper and take a look at what the Wanda Metropolitano-based outfit do in possession, we learn that they feature amongst the league’s top five teams for the number of players per possession (almost three), whilst they find themselves amongst the division’s leading five teams for the number of dangerous possessions per match (4.6).
When it comes to possession, there are a whole host of aspects that we can analyse, with one of them being the degree of danger created. When we speak of dangerous possessions, we’re referring to those that end in a goal or a goalscoring opportunity. This video features a dangerous possession put together by Manuel Pellegrini’s charges. Betis excel in this department and lie second in the LaLiga standings for the number of dangerous possessions (5.7 per outing).
The Real Madrid players ensure that their team balance enables them to consistently produce and improve on their statistics as the games goes on. As we can see in the latest instalment of Clip of the Week, the Blancos record more dangerous possessions than any other side in the league (6.76 per game) and, crucially, they make them count.

Unai Emery’s charges head into this encounter with one of the highest possession percentages in the competition . The hosts are also one of the top three LaLiga Santander sides for initiative in the build-up and recovery rate, which is a reflection of their desire to get on the ball and harry the opposition after losing it. The Castellon outfit rank amongst the top five teams in terms of build-up play in the attacking third and build-up efficiency thanks to the talents of their most creative performers. Another key facet of the Yellow Submarine’s game relates to the fact that they lie top of the tree for forward passes played after regaining possession. Once they’ve won the ball back, Emery’s troops waste little time in progressing up the pitch and are fully prepared to accept the risk involved in such passes as they bid to exploit free spaces.
However, if there’s one thing for sure it’s that Getafe won’t give the Groguets an easy ride. In the fitness stakes, the Madrilenians are amongst the top five sides in the division for distance covered at high intensity (>21km/hr), whilst in the attacking third, they’re the league’s top dogs when it comes to short possessions and feature in the top five for completed long passes. When on the back foot, Getafe have proved themselves to be a solid side and have earned a spot amongst LaLiga Santander’s top five teams in the contention stakes, whilst they’re also the frontrunners when it comes to the percentage of successful tackles.
Emery’s Villarreal are very much a possession-based side. They’re amongst the league’s top five teams in terms of players involved in each possession as they make inroads into the opposition’s territory. Indeed, they’ve bagged themselves a place amongst the division’s top three teams for carries that break the midfield line and also boast the highest percentage of forward passes after having recovered possession. However, Getafe are no mugs and lie in third spot in the standings for forward passes after having won the ball back, meaning that both teams occupy a place on the podium in this particular facet. However, in terms of their style of play, Geta post some of the lowest stats for the number of players involved per possession, which is a reflection of their preference to win the ball back and break swiftly on the counter without stringing together too many passes. In the defensive phase, the capital club are the division’s top side when it comes to distance covered after losing possession, with all of the players willing to put in a shift and track back after having lost the ball.
Enes Ünal is very much the man of the moment on the back of his dazzling display in the team’s last outing, against RCD Espanyol. The frontman bagged a brace against the Catalans, including an overhead kick that’ll stay long in the memory, to hand his side all three points. With three goals to his name, Ünal is Getafe’s leading marksman and has recorded more shots than any of his teammates. He also features amongst the top 10 players in the division in terms of aerial duels. As for his link-up play, the Turkish hotshot is involved in the most double pressure passes, i.e. passes in which both the player who makes the pass and the receiver are put under pressure.
