This video illustrates how recoveries can be distinguished not only in terms of their effectiveness, but also their quality. Barcelona record the fourth-most advantageous recoveries in the league, i.e. situations that involve a numerical advantage and where the side in possession has more players ahead of the ball than the opposition.
Given the importance of build-up play in the system deployed by Xavi’s troops, the team’s set-up at the start of the attacking transition is key. This video shows how the Barcelona players react in these situations. It’s worth pointing out that 15% of the Catalan giants’ recoveries put them at an advantage.
Real Madrid are the LaLiga Santander front runners for the number of carries leading to shots, with four per game to their name. Carries can be analysed from a whole host of angles, but in this case we’re keen to look at their outcome, i.e. shots.
There’s no question that Ancelotti’s charges are capable of making the most of these actions, as illustrated in our Clip of the Week. The players’ ability to go past their man, their skill level and decision-making ability are key to the success of such actions, which can reap rich rewards for the capital club.
As we can see in this clip, Simeone’s boys post an average of two carries that lead to shots per game. Indeed, this is one of Atleti’s favourite tactics to pose a threat on goal. If we dive deeper and take a look at what the Wanda Metropolitano-based outfit do in possession, we learn that they feature amongst the league’s top five teams for the number of players per possession (almost three), whilst they find themselves amongst the division’s leading five teams for the number of dangerous possessions per match (4.6).
When it comes to possession, there are a whole host of aspects that we can analyse, with one of them being the degree of danger created. When we speak of dangerous possessions, we’re referring to those that end in a goal or a goalscoring opportunity. This video features a dangerous possession put together by Manuel Pellegrini’s charges. Betis excel in this department and lie second in the LaLiga standings for the number of dangerous possessions (5.7 per outing).
The Real Madrid players ensure that their team balance enables them to consistently produce and improve on their statistics as the games goes on. As we can see in the latest instalment of Clip of the Week, the Blancos record more dangerous possessions than any other side in the league (6.76 per game) and, crucially, they make them count.

As the lyrics of the popular song go, the city of Seville has that something special which, this season, rings particularly true. The Andalusian capital’s two LaLiga Santander representatives are enjoying excellent campaigns and both head into this battle for the local bragging rights amongst the division’s top five and with three points between them. It’s very much nip and tuck in this latest instalment of The Gran Derbi.
Manuel Pellegrini’s Betis side have proved themselves as a force to be reckoned with in attack. The Verdiblancos are amongst the league’s top three performing sides in attacking build-up play, whilst they also feature amongst the division’s leading five teams for initiative in the build-up and attacking build-up play and top the standings for dangerous possessions. As for their finishing, Betis have taken the second most shots, and are the league leaders for the percentage of shots on target.
Sevilla’s playing style is similar to that of their city foes as they also tend to favour intricate build-up play. Julen Lopetegui’s troops have bagged spots in the top three for initiative in the build-up, possession width and build-up play. The boys from the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan are also amongst the top three teams for finishing efficiency and preventing the opposition from scoring as they showcase an impressive ability to rule the roost in both boxes. Indeed, the Sevillistas also take their place on the podium in the shots taken stakes.
Despite being bitter rivals, if there’s one thing that Real Betis and Sevilla FC have in common it is their ability to spray the ball confidently around the pitch and disrupt the opposition’s set-up. The two Seville sides feature amongst the top five in the dangerous possession stakes, with the Verdiblancos lying top of the pile in that particular department. The old enemies also both involve many players in each possession, with the Benito Villamarin outfit landing a spot amongst the division’s top five, whilst their cross-city rivals feature amongst the top three.
Betis are the best team in the league when it comes to the number of carries that result in shots, a statistic they achieve thanks to their status as one of the top three teams in the division with the widest convex hull when in possession, which offers them greater space in which to operate. Meanwhile, Sevilla’s ability to switch from attack to defence is also worthy of note. Indeed, Lopetegui’s charges are one of the division’s top three sides when it comes to distance covered after losing possession.
There can be little doubt that Sergio Canales is one of the Spanish top tier’s most talented performers. The Betis man features amongst the top 10 players for passes played in the final third and passes leading to shots across the whole league, whilst his name crops up amongst the 15 players to have chalked up the most high-intensity actions. Amongst his teammates, Canales is the standout player for players passed per pass and is the team’s top dog when it comes to breaking lines. He also lies second in the Verdiblancos’ charts for the number of dribbles that result in a shot (behind Nabil Fekir) and currently stands second in the rankings that measure the number of times a player’s dribbles break the opposition’s midfield line.
