The Copa del Rey Final on April 18th, between Atlético de Madrid and Real Sociedad, will mark the debut in Spain of RefCam, an innovative technology developed as part of LALIGA’s drive to enhance the football viewing experience, introduced for this competition following an agreement with the RFEF.

RefCam delivers a unique view of the match from the referee’s perspective, giving fans an unprecedented level of immersion in the game at the elite level.

Javier Alberola, the referee who will take charge of the final at La Cartuja, will wear a headset-mounted camera with an integrated microphone, giving the host broadcast feed, produced by RTVE, a closer, more immersive and entirely new perspective on the action.

The launch not only brings this groundbreaking technology to Spain for the first time but also marks the start of its phased introduction in LALIGA. From April 22 onwards, RefCam will be used in one match per matchday, underlining the competition’s commitment to evolving football’s audiovisual experience. Following its debut at La Cartuja, RefCam will feature in several standout fixtures on the calendar, including:

  • Matchday 33: FC Barcelona vs RC Celta (April 22)
  • Matchday 32: Real Betis vs Real Madrid (April 24)
  • Matchday 34: Valencia CF vs Atlético de Madrid
  • Matchday 35: FC Barcelona vs Real Madrid

A new way to experience football

RefCam is integrated into the referee’s headset and captures their real-time view throughout the match. This angle places viewers at the centre of the action, allowing them to experience the speed, intensity and closeness of every moment from a perspective not previously seen in Spanish football broadcasting.

The system also captures audio, helping audiences better understand refereeing decisions, while bringing greater transparency and a stronger sense of connection between the game and fans.

Cutting-edge technology enhancing the spectacle

The introduction of RefCam forms part of LALIGA’s broader strategy to keep transforming the way football is experienced, with a focus on making coverage more immersive, engaging and distinctive.

As well as enriching the live broadcast, RefCam opens up new opportunities across digital platforms by enabling the creation of innovative content and highlights from a truly unique viewpoint: that of the referee.

Following its debut at the Copa del Rey Final, RefCam will begin its rollout in LALIGA as a key new tool in reshaping football’s audiovisual storytelling and bringing the game closer to fans around the world.
