LALIGA is strengthening its international commitment to combating audiovisual piracy by joining StreamSafe, an initiative bringing together organisations from the sports, entertainment and audiovisual industries to raise awareness of the risks associated with illegal content consumption and encourage safe, legal alternatives.
Launched in Switzerland, the campaign aims to alert consumers to the consequences of illegal streaming, which extend beyond the financial damage suffered by rights holders. Users of these services may be exposed to risks such as fraud, theft of personal and banking data, phishing and malware, while potentially contributing indirectly to the financing of unlawful activities.
The scale of the problem is reflected in data from the Audiovisual Anti-Piracy Alliance (AAPA), which estimates that around 634,000 people in Switzerland pay for illegal IPTV services, representing 9.4% of the population aged 16 to 74. The study also estimates that legitimate pay-TV providers in the country lose around CHF 75.8 million, equivalent to more than €82 million, annually as a result of piracy.
This challenge extends beyond national borders. According to the same source, 34.4 million people across the European Union and the United Kingdom accessed illegal IPTV services in 2025, 2.5 times as many as in 2018.
LALIGA reaffirms its commitment to international cooperation
LALIGA’s participation in StreamSafe forms part of its global strategy to protect audiovisual rights, based on developing technological solutions, pursuing legal action and cooperating with other industry stakeholders. The organisation maintains that tackling piracy is essential to safeguarding the value of competitions, clubs’ revenues and the sustainability of the sporting ecosystem.
Javier Tebas, President of LALIGA said: “Audiovisual piracy is neither a local problem nor a victimless offence: it is a global threat that deprives clubs, players and the entire football ecosystem of resources, from the elite level to grassroots football. At LALIGA, we have been fighting it for years through technology, legal action and international cooperation, and we know that many of these platforms are backed by organised networks that also put fans’ data and money at risk. That is why we support StreamSafe: the fight against piracy can only be effective if leagues, operators and authorities work together, including in Switzerland.”
Claudius Schäfer, CEO of the Swiss Football League stated: “Audiovisual rights revenues are a fundamental pillar of the development of professional football in Switzerland. Illegal streaming puts these revenues at risk and ultimately harms clubs and the sport as a whole. Through StreamSafe, together with our partners, we are sending a clear signal against this trend. At the same time, we want to raise fans’ awareness of the risks of illegal services and strengthen recognition of the value of legal sports broadcasting.”
Morten Solbakken, Executive Vice President and COO of NAGRAVISION said: “Illegal streaming exposes consumers to the risk of fraud, malware and the misuse of their personal data. At NAGRAVISION, we firmly believe that trust and security are essential to a good entertainment experience. Through our collaboration with StreamSafe, we help consumers make safer, more informed choices and enjoy content with peace of mind.”
An international alliance to protect fans and the industry
StreamSafe brings together organisations including NAGRAVISION, the Swiss Football League, National League, Bundesliga, Premier League, UEFA, CANAL+, Swisscom, Sky and DAZN, alongside other stakeholders from sport, media and entertainment.
The campaign will be rolled out across sports stadiums, audiovisual platforms, cinemas, media outlets and participants’ digital channels, with the aim of reaching fans directly and raising awareness of the consequences of illegal content consumption.
By taking part in this initiative, LALIGA continues to promote a coordinated response to audiovisual piracy, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in protecting consumers, rights holders and the wider sports industry.
