The 2024/25 season reached its conclusion this past week with Real Oviedo winning the LALIGA HYPERMOTION promotion playoff final. That and the rest of the week’s top stories are outlined below.
Real Oviedo return to LALIGA EA SPORTS 24 years later
We now know all 20 teams who’ll be competing in LALIGA EA SPORTS in 2025/26, with Real Oviedo having clinched the final place by overcoming CD Mirandés in the LALIGA HYPERMOTION promotion playoff final. A Francisco Portillo goal in extra time proved to be the winner, earning the Asturian side a 3-2 aggregate victory and a return to Spain’s top flight for the first time since 2000/01.
FC Andorra are back in LALIGA HYPERMOTION
After an absence of just one season, FC Andorra are back in LALIGA HYPERMOTION. The club from the principality of Andorra have bounced straight back into the second division of Spanish football thanks to a 2-1 aggregate victory over SD Ponferradina in the Primera Federación promotion playoffs.
Real Sociedad’s B team will play in LALIGA HYPERMOTION
The other team celebrating victory in the Primera Federación promotion playoffs this past weekend was Real Sociedad’s B team, who defeated Gimnàstic de Tarragona 4-3 on aggregate. The Basque club’s B team have reached this level before, playing in LALIGA HYPERMOTION in 2021/22, and now they’ll be the only B team competing in the top two divisions of Spanish football next season.
Matías Almeyda is the new coach of Sevilla FC
Sevilla FC announced their new coach this past week, with the hiring of Argentinian Matías Almeyda. The 51-year-old spent a season with the Andalusian club during his playing days and was most recently the coach at Greek side AEK Athens.
Joan García moves to FC Barcelona
Joan García, who was one of the most impressive goalkeepers in LALIGA EA SPORTS last season, has left RCD Espanyol to join city rivals FC Barcelona. The 24-year-old has signed a contract with Los Azulgranas that’ll run until 2031.
RCD Espanyol bring in Marko Dmitrović and Kike García
RCD Espanyol have already brought in a replacement for Joan García, by signing veteran goalkeeper Marko Dmitrović. Los Pericos have also brought in additional firepower in attack, by signing veteran centre-forward Kike García.
Alberto Moleiro joins Villarreal CF to stay in LALIGA EA SPORTS
Although UD Las Palmas suffered relegation last season, Alberto Moleiro stood out on an individual level with his six goals. He will remain in LALIGA EA SPORTS and will once again be wearing yellow, this time the yellow of Villarreal CF, who have signed him on a deal that runs to 2030.
Álvaro Valles signs with Real Betis
Álvaro Valles has a new club, having signed a contract with Real Betis until 2030. The goalkeeper didn’t play at all last season, but had previously caught the eye while playing for UD Las Palmas. He is now back at the club where he began his career, having come through the Real Betis academy as a youngster.
Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid stay alive in the Club World Cup
The Club World Cup is currently taking place in the United States, and both Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid remain alive after two rounds of play. Although both Spanish sides failed to win their opener, they then fought back and won their second match by a 3-1 scoreline, against Mexican side Pachuca in the case of Real Madrid and against American club Seattle Sounders in the case of Atlético de Madrid.
Jude Bellingham will undergo shoulder surgery
Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham has confirmed that he will undergo shoulder surgery following the Club World Cup, to deal with a lingering issue he has had in his left shoulder. He has been wearing a brace, but will go under the knife to solve the issue more permanently.
