The final hours of the transfer window at LALIGA

Transparency with the media and financial sustainability were the standouts of this exciting night.

Last Friday, September 1, 2023, the transfer window slammed shut across the European leagues and at LALIGA those final hours were frantic ones, with 100 deals on the final day and the cameras of LALIGA. LÍMITE 24 HOURS there to capture it all, along with more than 65 national and international journalists.

This television special, broadcast by DAZN, Movistar Plus+ and LALIGA+, as well as multiple international partners, offered fans exclusive access to everything that was happening on the now famous seventh floor at LALIGA, the work space of the Economic Control and Competitions departments, and gave them explanatory videos and information about how the market and registration rules work.

The programme was led by Rubén Martín and Isabel Forner, with Axel Torres, Alberto Edjogo, Héctor Fernández, Danae Boronat and Andrea Orlandi as studio analysts. LALIGA ambassadors and former players Fernando Morientes and Gaizka Mendieta took part as guests; reporter Sandra Díaz had exclusive access to the LALIGA professionals’ working area; and Javi Valle was live from Seville, informing on the latest from the Andalusian clubs.

Likewise, some LALIGA EA SPORTS clubs played an active part, offering their thoughts on market developments in real time: Ramón Alarcón, Real Betis CEO; Victor Orta, Sevilla’s Sporting Director; and David Torras, Girona’s Director of Communications.

The programme was produced by LALIGA Studios and Zeppelin TV (Banijay Iberia). LALIGA Studios is the new sports content production company created by LALIGA in conjunction with Banijay.

Furthermore, the programme was extended through a live on LALIGA’s social media channels before, during and after the show, which reached 1.7 million views. Viewers were able to follow all the movement in the transfer market from 18:30 onwards, as well as enjoying the live show and the debate that followed it where the presenters gave their thoughts after the window closed.

LALIGA, an example of financial sustainability

The final night of the transfer window in LALIGA saw no fewer than 100 deals, of which 64 were incomings (10 transfers, 1 recission, 26 free transfers and 27 loans), and 36 outgoings (8 transfers, 11 rescissions and 17 loans).

LALIGA, alongside the Bundesliga, continues to be a prime model of financial sustainability and club viability, all the while remaining extremely competitive, as shown by the European titles and individual prizes won by LALIGA clubs and players, who lead such rankings in recent years.

As for the net investment in signings (purchases less sales), which is the correct measure with which to compare investment in the transfer market across different leagues, LALIGA EA SPORTS is the 3rd competition among the big European leagues, only behind the Premier League, which is a loss-making model, and Ligue 1, where only PSG, with 40% of purchases, distort the market, despite running up losses of over €650 million in the last three seasons, according to audited financial information.
