The European success continues for the teams from the Liga BBVA. Fresh from Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid and FC Barcelona’s qualification for the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League, holders Sevilla FC have sealed their ticket to the last eight of the UEFA Europa League after defeating Villarreal CF in both legs (1-3 and 2-1) of the tournament’s last 16.
The tie’s return match saw goals from Vicente Iborra and Denis Suárez hand victory to los hispalenses in a game that served up two differing halves of football. While the first period was chiefly characterised by the domination enjoyed by Unai Emery’s men and the low number of chances created by both sides, the second delivered the night’s goals and excitement.
Sevilla took the lead through a counter-attack finished off by Iborra, before Villarreal hit back quickly through Giovani dos Santos to offer a warning that, despite the hosts’ first-leg advantage, it wasn’t all over. However, a goal from Suárez brought up the final 2-1 scoreline and confirmed the Andalusians’ passage to the quarter-finals of the Europa League, where they will look to continue their defence of the trophy won last season.
