"I've tried everything, but on the 30th of June my time as an FC Barcelona player will come to an end". With these words, Carles Puyol announced his exit from the club where he learned his trade. He made the statement surrounded by his teammates, coaches and family who have been with him throughout the 15 seasons he has shared with the Azulgrana first team.
"It's really emotional to see so many people at my last press conference as a Barça player", he started. "I'm privileged because I’ve lived the dream of millions of people. I came here as a boy and I leave with a family", he confessed in an event at which the support, affection and thanks of all those who have worked at his side were evident.
Puyol was unwilling to comment on any details about his future. "First I want to recover and try to get over my knee problems", revealed Puyol. The issue has dogged him for several seasons and only allowed him to play twelve matches this season.
The captain did not forget anyone as he bade farewell. "I would also like to thank the physios and doctors who have helped throughout this time. And I don't want to forget about the fans either, who have given me unconditional support. I have been very fortunate in this regard. I will really miss you all", he stated emotionally.
In the tribute, the president José María Bartomeu used six words to describe one of the stalwarts of the team over the last few years: "Loyal, sincere, exceptional, sensible, affectionate, and extraordinarily kind".
During his long-spanning career and the 15 years of service he has given the club, he has earned a place in the heart of all Barcelona's supporters, and Bartomeu finished off with a touching message: "There is only one thing left to say: Thank you. Thank you for leaving your mark here and for being such a shining example for future generations".
