FC Barcelona and Athletic Club both lost on the second matchday of the UEFA Champions League, with a 3-2 defeat for the Catalan side on their visit to Paris, while the Basques fared no better in Belarus.

It was a first half full of goals and excitement in the French capital. David Luiz opened the scoring, firing low past Marc-André ter Stegen. The lead did not last long, with Leo Messi combining spectacularly with two teammates before levelling the match a couple of minutes later. PSG continued to dominate possession, and they were able to take advantage through Marco Verratti, the shortest player in their side, who headed home from a corner.

The second half saw two more goals. Blasie Matuidi, doubling the difference between the two sides, scored the first. Neymar responded almost immediately after, but the match finished in defeat for the Spaniards thanks to bad luck, with Munir El Haddadi hitting the post late on.

Bad luck in Belarus

Ernesto Valverde’s side also did not have lady luck on their side. Athletic had a difficult trip to Belarus as they looked to get back to winning ways following their draw with Eibar in Liga BBVA at the weekend. Early goals from Denis Polyakov and Aleksandr Karnitski were enough to dash the hopes of the side from the Basque Country. Aritz Aduriz, on the stroke of half time halved the deficit for the visitors, but they were unable to change the final result of 2-1. This means that the 'Txingurri' sit bottom of their group with only one point from two games.
