This video illustrates how recoveries can be distinguished not only in terms of their effectiveness, but also their quality. Barcelona record the fourth-most advantageous recoveries in the league, i.e. situations that involve a numerical advantage and where the side in possession has more players ahead of the ball than the opposition.
Given the importance of build-up play in the system deployed by Xavi’s troops, the team’s set-up at the start of the attacking transition is key. This video shows how the Barcelona players react in these situations. It’s worth pointing out that 15% of the Catalan giants’ recoveries put them at an advantage.
Real Madrid are the LaLiga Santander front runners for the number of carries leading to shots, with four per game to their name. Carries can be analysed from a whole host of angles, but in this case we’re keen to look at their outcome, i.e. shots.
There’s no question that Ancelotti’s charges are capable of making the most of these actions, as illustrated in our Clip of the Week. The players’ ability to go past their man, their skill level and decision-making ability are key to the success of such actions, which can reap rich rewards for the capital club.
As we can see in this clip, Simeone’s boys post an average of two carries that lead to shots per game. Indeed, this is one of Atleti’s favourite tactics to pose a threat on goal. If we dive deeper and take a look at what the Wanda Metropolitano-based outfit do in possession, we learn that they feature amongst the league’s top five teams for the number of players per possession (almost three), whilst they find themselves amongst the division’s leading five teams for the number of dangerous possessions per match (4.6).
When it comes to possession, there are a whole host of aspects that we can analyse, with one of them being the degree of danger created. When we speak of dangerous possessions, we’re referring to those that end in a goal or a goalscoring opportunity. This video features a dangerous possession put together by Manuel Pellegrini’s charges. Betis excel in this department and lie second in the LaLiga standings for the number of dangerous possessions (5.7 per outing).
The Real Madrid players ensure that their team balance enables them to consistently produce and improve on their statistics as the games goes on. As we can see in the latest instalment of Clip of the Week, the Blancos record more dangerous possessions than any other side in the league (6.76 per game) and, crucially, they make them count.

Camp de Mestalla
This regional derby promises to be a thrilling encounter between two sides who are aiming high in LaLiga Santander. The Che have excelled in the early stages of the season as one of the league’s most lethal attacking forces and currently rank among the division’s five most effective teams in front of goal and in terms of percentage of shots on target. Valencia’s ability to convert their chances makes them one of the team’s that requires the fewest shots to score.
True to his renowned blueprint, Jose Bordalas has transformed Valencia into one of the league’s highest-intensity sides when it comes to regaining possession, with the Valencians performing well in the recoveries per minute of opposition possession stakes.
Meanwhile, the Groguets rank as one of LaLiga Santander’s top-performing sides in the possession standings and lie amongst the top five teams in offensive build-up play as they are one of the teams with the highest number of passes per possession. The fiercely competitive streak that is a hallmark of any Unai Emery side is most certainly present in this Villarreal team, which is excelling at both ends of the pitch and can lay claim to being the team that denies the opposition the highest percentage of chances in their own box, whilst the Castellon-based outfit are also one of the most efficient sides when it comes to converting chances in the opposition’s penalty area .
These two sides prepare to go head-to-head with just two points separating them in the league standings.
Whilst the hosts come into this contest as one of the top three sides in the league in terms of the number of carries that lead to a shot and lie top of the pile in the standings for dangerous possessions that end in a goal, the Yellow Submarine are no slouches themselves. Emery’s charges occupy third spot for the number of carries that break the midfield line, whilst the visitors also boast one of the top flight’s smallest hull convex areas when out of possession.
The Valencia-born midfield man is a born leader within the Mestalla outfit’s ranks. Soler has begun the campaign in sublime form and despite having been sidelined for several games through injury he remains very much a key man for the Che. He currently leads the way in the team’s goalscoring charts on three goals, whilst he lies joint top of the side’s assist charts alongside Gonçalo Guedes after having twice laid on goals for teammates. The Spanish international also boasts the highest assists and shots average in the Valencia squad. On average, when Soler plays his passes he has 3.87 teammates ahead of him. Given his impressive vision, it’s of little surprise that he features as one of the team’s top assist providers, with his excellent decision-making skills standing him in good stead. Soler is a young talent with great strength of character who has quickly adjusted to Bordalas’s playing style and is revelling in a more advanced midfield role, from where he is constantly able to make forward forays into opposition territory. A complete footballer if ever there was one!
