President

JAVIER TEBAS MEDRANO

Javier Tebas Medrano was born in 1962 in San Jose, Costa Rica. He is a Spanish citizen and holds a law degree from the University of Zaragoza.

He has been a practising lawyer since 1987. After he founded his own firm specialising in Corporate Law, he extended his areas of specialisation to Sports Law and Bankruptcy Law.

His first became directly involved with the world of football in 1993, when he was elected president of Sociedad Deportiva Huesca, a position he held until 1998 (when it played in the 3rd Division and Second Division B). Later he became a Director of C.D. Badajoz S.A.D. and C.D. Toledo S.A.D. In 2001 he was elected Vice President of LaLiga and in 2003 representative of the so-called G-30, a group of 30 lower-income LaLiga clubs which acted together to negotiate their audiovisual rights. Since April 2013, he has been the President of LaLiga. He was re-elected in 2016 and again in 2019 for another four years.

Javier Tebas' presidency of LaLiga has focused on three key areas: economic oversight, the centralised sale of audiovisual rights and the internationalisation strategy.

The first great accomplishment of his presidency was to successfully control the finances of Spanish professional football, allowing clubs to reduce their debts and doing away with late payments to players.

Another major achievement during his tenure as president was the centralised sale of audiovisual rights, through Royal Decree-Law 5/2015, which has allowed all LaLiga clubs to significantly increase their revenues.

Internationalisation is today one of the hallmarks of LaLiga. Every day, over 2.7 billion people follow our football matches through more than 100 broadcasters in 178 countries. None of this would be possible without the work that LaLiga and its clubs carry out through 10 offices and 46 delegations, with a total reach of 84 countries.

Innovation, technological development and data strategy through Business Intelligence and Analytics are also an essential part of its strategy and are already part of the DNA of LaLiga and its clubs.

Javier Tebas combines his work at the helm of LaLiga with other activities, such as speaker in different forums, and as a lecturer in different businesses and sports disciplines, Masters and university or private diplomas (ISDE, Barcelona Bar Association, Masters in Sports Law at Escuela Universitaria del Real Madrid, etc.).
