The nickname 'babazorro' is one of the best-known and unique in Liga Adelante. Its history is as curious as it is old. For many it is almost indecipherable, but the truth is it not only serves to designate D. Alaves, but also the inhabitants of the province of Alava.

The origin comes from Basque language: 'Baba' refers to 'fava' beans, and 'zorro' means 'sack'.  Therefore, the word defines fava bean storage agents or, as they´ve come to be known in our days, fava eaters, since there must have been a lot of production of this bean in the province of Alava.

Although, in derogatory terms it could be taken to indicate a lack of intelligence or avidity, since back in the day the players and everything related to the Vitorian team has been referred to as 'babazorro', as a term of endearment.
