Who was he? Marcelino Elena (b. Gijón, Asturias, 26/09/1971) was a willowy centre back who wore the colours of Real Sporting de Gijón, RCD Mallorca and CD Ejido. He was also an international with the Spanish national side and played at Newcastle United FC in England.
What is he remembered for? The defender was part of the Mallorca team that dazzled the football world in the mid-90s and claimed a Spanish Supercopa in the 1998/99 season. That season Marcelino made four appearances in the tournament, all of them in the starting eleven.
What happened to him? Since retiring in 2004 with Ejido, Marcelino has been involved in the football world by contributing to broadcasts as a sports commentator.
Did you know? Marcelino scored Mallorca’s first goal in a European competition against Heart of Midlothian FC in the 1998/99 UEFA Cup. The centre back was also in the Majorcan starting eleven that was defeated in the final of the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup against SS Lazio.
