Villarreal CF beat Real Sociedad de Fútbol 5-1 in the Estadio El Madrigal, two and a half months after its last home win over Valencia CF (4-1). The Yellows close out matchday 19 of the Liga BBVA in fifth place with 34 points, two spots higher than the team from Donostia.
Marcelino's men rediscovered their spark, playing at full throttle right from kick-off. Shortly after the 15 minute mark, the Yellows took the lead through a goal from inside the box from Mexican striker Giovani dos Santos. It was Giovani who set up his partner in crime Ikechukwu Uche at the back post to finish off a wonderful team move with one of the goals of the weekend. And it was the Mexican who left the home keeper Claudio Bravo stranded as he made it 3-0 before the break.
Real Sociedad tried to rally in the second half but the game followed a similar pattern. The Yellows continued to apply the pressure and the Nigerian Uche bagged his second goal of the night in a one-on-one with Bravo, slotting it past his right-hand side. The txuri-urdin could find no way to contain Villarreal's whirlwind football, and midfielder Moi Gómez scored a fifth for the home side. This time round, Real striker Imanol Agirretxe found a reply with a header that closed the scoring. Villarreal's impressive display was rewarded with three points that put them two points away from the UEFA Champions League spots.
