Villarreal CF is back on track in the Liga BBVA after defeating RCD Espanyol 1-2 in the Cornellà - El Prat. Moi Gómez and Jérémy Perbet tipped the balance in the favour of the visitors with their respective goals, while Jhon Córdoba cut the deficit for the home side.
It was a sound first-half performance from the Yellows, who enjoyed the majority of the chances in front of goal. The first to try their luck were Tomás Pina and academy player Nahuel Leiva, who was playing just his second match in the competition. It was when Espanyol made an attempt to relieve the pressure applied by Villarreal that the visitors found their first goal. A neat pass from Nahuel found Moi Gómez in the six-yard box and the midfielder stroked the ball into the back of the net to give his side the advantage nine minutes before the break.
No sooner had the second half kicked off than Villarreal wrapped the match up. French striker Perbet latched onto a ball in the six-yard box and doubled his team's lead with his eighth Liga BBVA goal. After the visitors' second goal, the side from Barcelona finally responded through Córdoba, but his goal was not enough to mount a comeback. Sergio García could have rescued a point, but Sergio Asenjo stopped his penalty in injury time.
