Villarreal changes
Villarreal coach Marcelino rang the changes with his side after Thursday night’s Europa League semi-final first leg win over Liverpool, resting a number of first-team regulars, but it did not appear to hinder them in the east-coast derby.
Samu Garcia
Roberto Soldado dribbled in off the left flank and squared to edge of area for Samuel Garcia. The Villarreal forward controlled, picked his spot and fired wide of Diego Alves for his second goal of the season, and a deserved lead for the visitors, who had looked the more dangerous side.

Adrian Lopez
Having laid on the opener, Soldado then showed great vision to set up the second for Adrian Lopez. Villarreal broke away on a counter-attack and Soldado’s pass from his own half set Adrian scampering through on goal, where he held his nerve one-on-one with Alves to dink the ball into the corner. It was Adrian’s second goal in as many games, having scored against Liverpool, and Soldado’s 10th Liga BBVA assist this season.
Valencia lose Cheryshev again
Valencia were playing for little more than local pride with the European places out of their reach. Diego Alves had to go full length to turn a shot from Rodrigo around the post in the first half and a last-ditch intervention from Siqueira bounced against his own post midway the second. Pako Ayestaran’s attempts to shake up the team suffered a blow when Denis Cheryshev returned from injury as a substitute only to suffer a relapse, and the Russian had to depart leaving his team with 10 men for the last few minutes.
Villarreal make sure of fourth
The Yellow Submarine made sure of fourth place in the Liga BBVA earning themselves a berth in qualifying rounds for the Champions League group stages next season, and a chance to return to the competition they last graced five season ago.
