Torres the hero at El Madrigal

Atlético Madrid earned a hard fought win 0-1 away to Villarreal CF 0-1 in matchday 34 of Liga BBVA. The visitors' goal did not come until the 74th minute and it was a beautiful piece of work from Fernando Torres, who had entered the pray 12 minutes previously.

In the opening stages, Atleti took control of the game. After 20' Arda Turan saw a header fly past the post following a Koke cross. It was the Madrid-born player who then hit the other post shortly after, however following those chances, the game changes and the home side created danger. Víctor Ruiz and Gerard Moreno were denied in quick succession by Jan Oblak and Diego Godín respectively.

In the second half the game was even until the 73rd minute. Fernando Torres created a goal from nothing and won his side the game. The Atleti forward stole the ball in the middle of the park, and took on Sergio Asenjo in the area before beating two defenders with the finish to make it 0-1. Antoine Griezmann could have made it better however Asenjo saved. Mario Gaspar fired over in added time, and it was Diego Simeone’s men who took the spoils to maintain their advantage in third place.
