Things tighten up at the top, while several teams take huge steps towards survival

Girona and Sporting won to close in on the league leaders, while Mirandés and Albacete widen the gap between themselves and the drop zone.

The Liga Adelante enters its final sprint and the respective races to achieve automatic promotion, to get into the play-offs and to avoid relegation are still very much alive. Jaime Mata and David Rodríguez grabbed the headlines by scorings two goals each, while no team managed to pick up a victory away from home.

Girona FC close in on the leaders

The Catalan side continue their forward march this weekend by beating At. Osasuna 3-0 at the Estadio de Montilivi. Pablo Machín’s side have taken 15 points from the last 18 available and with this latest victory they move to four points behind Real Betis. The Andalusians, who sit top of the table, drew 2-2 with UE Llagostera, who have now gone 13 games without defeat.

The main man for Girona was Jaime Mata. The striker put his side on their way to victory by scoring two goals, breaking the deadlock and then netting again later in the game, to move on to seven goals for the season in the Liga Adelante.

Meanwhile, another team that could fight for second place in the final weeks of the season is R. Sporting, who beat RCD Mallorca 1-0 to move on to 66 points.

The battle for sixth place heats up

This week there was also a direct fight for the play-off positions, with SD Ponferradina and Real Zaragoza drawing 1-1 The Aragón side stay ahead of Ponferradina thanks to this result, although only because of their superior head-to-head difference. However, the fight for sixth spot is getting tighter as Llagostera are hot on their heels, just three points behind.

Albacete B. and CD Mirandés move closer to survival

Albacete picked up a vital win to move up the league table and move closer to survival, the objective they crave so much. Luis César Sampedro’s side move up to 15th place, with 44 points after beating FC Barcelona 2-1 in the final minutes. The team from Castilla-La Mancha move up to 15th place in the table and on to 44 points, eight above Osasuna, who occupy the final spot in the relegation zone, with 36 points.

CD Mirandés also picked up a vital three points after beating RC Recreativo 2-1. Carlos Terrazas’side knew before the game on Sunday night that a win would put daylight between them and then the dropzone, and thanks to the victory, the team from Miranda de Ebro move up to 13th place, on 46 points.

Meanwhile, Alcorcón also widened the gap between themselves and the relegation zone to 10 points after beating R. Racing C., a win in which David Rodríguez was the star man, scoring two goals, taking his tally for the season in the Liga Adelante to an impressive 18 strikes.
