Nearly half a century has elapsed since the first derby game played between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid at the Vicente Calderon. Forty-nine meetings later, this weekend's tussle for local bragging rights sees the Calderon play host to the final chapter - at least as far as LaLiga Santander fixtures are concerned - of a tale brimming with memories of thrilling encounters, unforgettable goals and magical moments.

There won't be a spare seat in the house on Saturday, as the capital-based clubs lock horns in their 49th league meeting at the Calderon. A lot of water has passed under the bridge since the sides' first-ever encounter on the banks of the Manzanares back on 16 April 1967. That derby fixture took place on Matchday 29 of the 1966/67 season, as the sides shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw. Jose Cardona handed Los Colchoneros an early lead, only for strikes from Ramon Grosso and Jose Veloso to put the visitors into the driving seat, before Adelardo Rodriguez netted a late equaliser.

Atleti's current home has witnessed plenty of memorable derby games, including those which saw the rivals record their first wins over their eternal enemies at the stadium. The madridistas were first to taste victory at the Calderon, when Amancio Amaro's winner earned them a 1-0 triumph behind enemy lines on 11 November 1968. Two years later, on 15 March 1970, Atleti exacted revenge with a 3-0 success secured thanks to a Luis Aragones brace and a Jose Garate effort.

It remains to be seen what this final showdown at the Calderon has in store, but one thing that would appear to be virtually guaranteed is goals, with the sides' previous 48 clashes on Atletico territory having served up just two goalless stalemates (in the 1982/83 and 1993/94 campaigns). It's sure to be an entertaining affair, as Atleti look to sign off with a win in the last derby at the Calderon before they take up residence at their new home at the start of next season.
