Marc-André ter Stegen is the new FC Barcelona keeper. The German goalie arrived in the city on Thursday to be presented at his new club and, after signing the new contract that ties him to the Azulgranas until 2019, he said that "it is a great challenge to guard this team’s goal, but it’s also the best thing that can happen to any footballer".
The goalie from Mönchengladbach, formerly of his city’s team, spoke to the media moments after taking his first steps on the Camp Nou turf and standing in front of the goal that he will have to defend for the next five seasons. Additionally, while admitting that he does not yet speak Spanish or Catalan well, in perfect Spanish he said, "it is really important for me to play for this team".
"Willkommen in Barcelona (Welcome to Barcelona)", were the words the club’s vice president Jordi Mestre i Masdeu and the sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta used to greet him. "Being the Barça keeper is a difficult job, one of the most important role’s in world football, but we think you are able for the task", Zubizarreta assured the Catalan side’s newest signing.
The goalkeeper, fully aware of the job he will have on his hands during the next few years said that "Barça is one of the biggest clubs in the world and Víctor Valdés is an extraordinary keeper who has done a lot for this team. But I’m not him and will do everything in my power to do a good job here".
