  • It opened on December 14th, 1947, with a match between Real Madrid CF and Portuguese side Os Belenenses which ended 3-1 in favor of 'Los Blancos' (the Whites). Sabino Barinaga scored the opening goal.
  • Formerly known as Nuevo Chamartin, on January 4th, 1955 a general assembly of members voted to change the name to Santiago Bernabeu in honour of the club president.
  • May 18th, 1957 saw the opening of their floodlight installation and the first night-time game in the club's history. It pitted 'Los Blancos' against Brazilian side Sort Club do Recife (Madrid winning 5-3).
  • The stadium hosted the European Cup final of 1964 between Spain and the Soviet Union with Spain winning 2-1 and being crowned European Champions for the first time in its history.
  • The stadium also hosted four games of the FIFA World Cup in 1982, including the final between Italy and West Germany with the Italians winning 3-1.
  • The 1982 FIFA World Cup saw an upgrade in the floodlights along with new scoreboards and a metal canopy structure which covered three-quarters of the stands.
  • The stadium has hosted four UEFA Champions league/European Cup finals: Real Madrid - Fiorentina (1967), Milan - Ajax (1969), Nottingham Forest - Hamburg (1980) and Bayern - Inter (2010).
  • On November 14th, 2007, a month before the celebration of its 60th anniversary, UEFA awarded the Santiago Bernabeu the category of 'elite stadium'.
  • Cristiano Ronaldo scored the 4 000th goal in official competition at the Santiago Bernabeu with a powerful long range effort against Levante UD which 'Los Blancos' won 4-2.
  • The Santiago Bernabeu has also hosted numerous large concerts. Internationally renowned groups and artists such as The Rolling Stones, U2 and Bruce Springsteen have all sold out the arena.
