Sporting win promotion for the first time (1943/44)
If there's one time that's remembered by all Sporting fans it's this season (1943-44). Manager Amadeo Sánchez made history by taking the 'rojiblanco' side up to La Liga BBVA. We remember the heroes who achieved the feat. Lerín, Ceballos, Sión, Marculeta, Victorero, Tamayo, Calleja, Cervigón, Luisín, Vitín, Gutiérrez, Paladini, Mijares, Benigno, Armandín, Chipía, Cholo Dindurra, Gundemaro, Sansón, Adolfo and Liz.
Promotion to Primera (69/70)
Sporting were promoted in the 69/70 season having won La Liga Adelante title with Quini as top scorer in the division.
First win in Europe against Torino (1978/79)
Real Sporting didn’t know what it was like to take part in a European competition. Their debut was against Torino, opponents who had finished runners-up in the Scudetto. Nobody expected what would happen in El Molinón, but the Asturian side would go on to win 3-0. The first goal was scored by Enzo Ferrero, a player who will always be a part of history. It was the 13th of September and the supporters in attendance enjoyed Sporting's first European win.
La Liga Runners-up (1978/79)
Despite not being used to playing various competitions at the same time, the season was outstanding. They were only bettered by Real Madrid, who didn’t gain as many wins as Sporting (17), but won by four points.
Quini's volley against Rayo (1979/80)
Few people foresaw what could happen after that far-post cross from Mena. An impossible ball got to Quini, but a majestic finish by 'El Brujo' (The Sorcerer) was burned into the retinas of all those that saw it for a long time.
Last qualification for Europe (1990)
A Luis Enrique goal in the last la Liga game of the season saw Sporting finish in fifth place and qualify for the UEFA Cup. This was the Asturian side’s last great feat.
Cup Final (81 and 82)
The Copa del Rey got away from them in two consecutive seasons. Barcelona and Real Madrid, respectively, were the tormentors of a team who came so close to the title and whose open play deserved more.
4-0 win away at the Nou Camp (1987)
Sporting have only ever won once at the Nou Camp, but this day is remembered by all 'sportinguistas'. It was in 1987 when Luismi, Flores and Eloy with two goals, sealed a comprehensive victory, a win which until now has not been repeated.
1-0 win against A.C. Milan in the UEFA Cup (87/88)
El Molinón was the setting for a magical night. They were facing a Milan side going through a re-building process, but still a top team. A volley from Jaime sent the fans in the 'mareona' wild, and gave Sporting a 1-0 win against the all-powerful Milan of Sacchi.
Victory at the Bernabéu and the ending of Mourinho's record (2011)
Possibly the smaller stature of this team hasn’t allowed them to play in this setting too many times. For that reason, whenever they achieve a win of this size they enjoy it more. And that's how it was when they won at the Bernabéu with a goal by De Las Cuevas, and in doing so putting an end to Mourinho's 9 year unbeaten home record. The Sporting manager at the time was Manolo Preciado.
