Diego Pablo Simeone continues to make history with Atlético de Madrid. The Argentinian coach changed the course of a team on the slide when he arrived in at Christmas in 2011. He recorded his 200th game in charge of los rojiblancos in all competitions in the 0-1 win over Villarreal on matchday 34 of the Liga BBVA.
Since his debut in the Atlético dugout on 7 January2012 in a game against Málaga CF in the Liga BBVA that ended 0-0, Simeone has overseen 200 games and has record of 127 wins, 40 draws and 33 defeats. All of these positive statistics have been accompanied by titles, and the most noteworthy achievement was winning the Liga BBVA title last season.
In addition to that title, under El Cholo have obtained the Copa del Rey (2012/13), the Spanish Super Cup (2014), the UEFA Europa League (2011-12) and the UEFA Super Cup (2012). Also, it should not be forgotten that Atlético came close to winning the UEFA Champions League last year.
In 132 Liga BBVA games, Simeone, has notched up some spectacular figures and has a record of 84 wins, 26 draws and 22 defeats. With the Argentinian in the dugout, Atlético finished fifth in the Liga BBVA in the 2011/12 season, third in 2012/13 and were champions in 2013/14. This season, they currently sit in third.
After Luis Aragonés, Simeone is the coach with the second highest number of titles won in charge of Atlético, with five trophies, and he is aiming to beat the record of six obtained by the 'Sabio de Hortaleza' or 'Wise Man of Hortaleza' as Aragonés was known. Also, next season Simeone will become the colchonero coach with the second highest number of games in charge of the side, overtaking Ricardo Zamaro’s tally of 220. Aragonés, who managed Atlético over 612 games is still a long way off in first place.
