Sevilla dominant
Sevilla pressed hard in the first half with Ever Banega one of their brightest players. Most of the danger came through his boots and he headed a good chance over from a corner early on. But a run of four defeats and a draw from their last five league games was reflected in a lack of precision in the final third despite them having 62% possession in the first half.
Betis unambitious
Betis had started brightly, boosted by a recent return to form after two wins and a draw which had all but removed them from the relegation battle, but they appeared content to let Sevilla boss the game and failed to register a single shot on target in the first half. Sergio Rico tipped over a rasping volley from Alvaro Cejudo after the break, and soon after a low cross from him was turned just wide of the post.
Gameiro Sweet 16
Sevilla top scorer Kevin Gameiro broke the deadlock after 57 minutes. Banega fed Steven N’Zonzi down the left side of the area and he crossed deep to the back post, where Gameiro headed home unopposed. It was the Frenchman’s 16th Liga BBVA goal this season, but only the second scored with his head.
Coke corker!
Substitute Coke sealed the victory with a stunning goal from just outside the area, 10 minutes from time. The defender caught it sweet on a first-time shot and curled it wide of Antonio Adan for his first goal of the season.
Sevilla back to winning ways
Sevilla, out of the battle for the Champions League places, returned to winning ways in time for their Europa League semi-final first leg on Thursday, when they play host to Shakhtar Donetsk at the Sanchez Pizjuan. They remain in the hunt for a top six finish in the Liga BBVA standings.
