Real Madrid 2-2 Borussia Dortmund

Real Madrid dominated the opening exchanges and were rewarded for their endeavour after 28 minutes when Karim Benzema slotted home at the back post from a low Dani Carvajal cross to the back post. Keylor Navas was forced to make two vital saves just before the break as Dortmund threatened, and it was a similar story in the second half. But it was Zinedine Zidane’s side who struck again when James swung in a great cross from the left for Benzema to double the lead with an unopposed header in the 53rd-minute. The France striker moved on to 50 goals in the competition, becoming only the sixth players to reach the mark.

The Germans quickly responded. Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang finished off a well-worked move to pull one back in the 61st and he was the creator of the equaliser two minutes from time. He raced off down the right and cross low into the middle for Marco Reus to net from close range. The result meant Dortmund finished top of Group F, two points ahead of Madrid in second place.

Olympique Lyon 0-0 Sevilla FC

Jorge Sampaoli’s men stood firm on a chilly night in France to secure their place in the last 16 as they finished second behind Juventus in Group H. It was Sevilla who came closest to breaking the deadlock when Vitolo curled a shot against the post in a one-on-one after 18 minutes. But Lyon were in the driving seat. Corentin Tolisson headed against crossbar soon after, and Mathieu Valbeuna curled a shot against the bar before halftime. Sampaoli’s side headed down the tunnel having conceded 12 shots on target, the highest in any game they have played so far this season. While it was a similar story in the second half, Sevilla remained disciplined and secured their place in the next round along with Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.
