Real Madrid beat Elche 3-0 in Saturday's opening matchday 25 encounter of the Liga BBVA. As a result, the Whites are now temporarily top the league as Barcelona and Atlético Madrid still have to play their respective fixtures. Meanwhile, the Alicante outfit remains in 13th place in the table.
Carlo Ancelotti's men, sticking to their philosophy at home, controlled the play from the beginning and were a constant threat on the visitors' goalmouth. After a great save by Manu Herrera to deny Karim Benzema and then a Ángel Di María corner coming off the crossbar, Asier Illarramendi gave Madrid the lead in the 34th minute. The Basque midfielder had a bit of good fortune scoring his first ever Liga BBVA goal as his shot came off Manu del Moral on its way into the back of the net.
In the second half, which was low on clear chances, Gareth Bale and Isco Alarcón both scored to put the finishing touches to the Whites' win. The Welshmen got his tenth goal of the campaign, and scored one of the goals of the season, when his shot from 35 metres found its way into the top right-hand corner of the net. Soon after, Isco made it 3-0 by finishing off a beautiful move he started from his own box.
