The pairings for the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League have been finalised. All eyes were on Madrid, where Real Madrid CF and Club Atlético de Madrid found out who stood between them and a place in Lisbon.
Former Whites player Luis Figo pulled the names out of the hat. Real Madrid were the first side to be drawn and they will take on FC Bayern München in their third visit to Germany in this year’s tournament. Also, this tie will be a replay of the semi-final from two seasons ago when the German outfit eliminated the Spaniards on penalties. “I think it will be an even and passionate tie”, said Real Madrid’s director of institutional relations, Emilio Butragueño.
Meanwhile Diego Simeone’s men will travel to London to take on Fernando Torres and César Azpilicueta of Chelsea FC. Atlético’s sporting director, José Luis Pérez Caminero, affirmed: “We will try and get to the final, not just for the players, but for the fans too”. The sides played each other in the UEFA Supercup in 2012, when Atlético surprised The Blues with a 1-4 win, including a Radamel Falcao hat trick.
The first legs will be played on the 22nd and 23rd of April, whilst the return leg will be a week later. The two Spanish sides will play the first tie at home as they try to make it through to the final.
