Rayo Vallecano overcame Getafe CF 2-0 to draw a close on the Liga BBVA matchday 36 action, in an encounter the home side looked the more threatening in front of goal. This win means Paco Jémez’s charges hang onto eleventh place in the league table with 46 points. Meanwhile, Pablo Franco’s team sit fifteenth with 36 points, and with safety in the division still not completely assured.

The opening exchanges were marked by the evenness between the sides as well as their inability to hit the target. Both teams set up with high lines, which made stringing passes together all the more difficult. However, an Emiliano Insua cross from the left wing led to a break in the deadlock, with Manucho firing a diagonal shot into the back of the net to make it 1-0. Pablo Franco did not change tack for the rest of the first half, as the visitors looked to hit their opponents on the break through Sergio Escudero and Freddy Hinestroza. Nonetheless, David Cobeño barely had anything to do before the half-time break.

Getafe put the Rayo keeper through his paces on two occasions soon after the restart though. First up to try his luck was Escudero, with an effort from the edge of the box that Cobeño managed to clear away, and then it was the turn of Pedro León whose strike from inside the box was turned away by the Murcia-born shotblocker. As the minutes ticked by the away team pushed further forward, which opened up a lot of space for Rayo to exploit thanks to the pace of players like Gaël Kakuta and Javier Aquino. A former Getafe man killed off any chance of there being a comeback with 18 minutes to go, when Miku beat Guaita from inside the area. Getafe tried to cut the deficit in the dying minutes, but the game ended 2-0.
