Matchday 19 brought an important victory for Rayo Vallecano, who earned a 0-1 away win over Real Sociedad in a clash between direct Liga BBVA rivals. The triumph sees the Madrid side climb the table, and means the men from San Sebastián cannot afford to surrender more points over the coming matchdays.
The defensive set-ups employed by both teams played their part in a match that lacked rhythm in the first half. Long balls and aerial play were to the fore in the encounter, with neither side able to create moments of real danger to open the scoring.
The half-time break and the changes made to their teams by David Moyes and Paco Jémez brought speed and intensity to a clash that was dominated by Real Sociedad in the second half. Control of possession saw the Anoeta outfit improve going forward, but young substitute Álex Moreno and the powerful Manucho were a danger to the home defence. And so it proved, as the Angolan forward headed in a corner nine minutes from the end, handing Rayo victory.
