An event held at the Spanish Benevolent Society-La Nacional in New York on Sunday saw Raul Gonzalez, LaLiga's country manager for the United States, decorated with a Gold Pin as part of the Caballero Español (Spanish Knight) scheme, in recognition of his efforts to cultivate and promote the values of his homeland throughout his career. TunaEspaña, as a partner association of the Marca España (Brand Spain) project, did the honours of presenting the accolade and paying tribute to the LaLiga executive.
"I'm very proud to be awarded this distinction. I'm really grateful to be able to contribute to promoting our country's values, just like other great Spanish sportspeople and professionals do all over the world," Raul said in front of a packed crowd that included prominent figures from both Spain and Latin America.
The event was scheduled to coincide with this year's instalment of the annual Hispanic Day celebrations in the US, a notable feature of which is the parade down New York's Fifth Avenue. The Spanish Benevolent Society, a non-profit organisation that seeks to support and showcase Spanish culture, staged the ceremony honouring Raul as well as coordinating the delegation from Spain taking part in the parade, which was headed by TunaEspaña.
This honour reinforces Raul's status as a distinguished ambassador for Spanish sport and is another illustration of his international renown. In his capacity as country manager, the former forward is at the forefront of Spanish professional football's plans in the USA, which were ushered into a new era when LaLiga opened its New York office in early 2016.
