Abelardo replaced Jose Ramon Sandoval midway through the 2014/15 season in the second tier of Spanish football. The former FC Barcelona and Sporting defender guided the Asturians back into LaLiga Santander the following season. He leaves them in 18th place in the standings with 12 points, four short of safety, after a 3-2 home defeat against SD Eibar on the weekend.
In a statement, R.Sporting said they were grateful for: "the commitment, effort and professionalism of Abelardo leading the team, as well as his understanding when it came to signing the agreement to leave the club, which will always be his home.”
