Villarreal CF made its intention of staying at the top end of the Liga BBVA table perfectly clear with a 3-1 defeat of CA Osasuna on matchday 22 of the competition. Jérémy Perbet, with a brace, and Manu Trigueros scored the home team's goals, while Oriol Riera found the net for the visitors.
Marcelino García Toral's men, who have collected nine of the last twelve points available in the Madrigal, came into the match with a hope of pulling closer to Athletic Club, who had drawn on Sunday, and therefore they set out to dominate from kick-off.
After a goalless first half, the home team went all out for the points after the break and soon took the lead. The first to score was Perbet, who had come on for Ikechukwu Uche on the verge of half time, and nine minutes later came the turn of Manu Trigueros before Perbet bagged a second late in the game to put the final nail in Osasuna's coffin with a solid right-foot finish. On the brink of the final whistle, Oriol Riera cut the deficit for the visitors, although it proved to be too little, too late.
