Real Madrid moved even closer to the top of the Liga BBVA table with a 1-0 win against RCD Espanyol in the Cornellà-El Prat. Pepe got the only goal of the game with a header near the hour mark.
The Whites approached this game knowing that they could close the gap at the top of the league following Saturday’s scoreless draw between Atlético Madrid and Barcelona. Carlo Ancelotti’s men went in search of all three points against a home side spurred on by the pace of Jhon Córdoba up front. Cristiano Ronaldo was the most industrious Madrid player but his two shots were well dealt with by Kiko Casilla in the Espanyol goal.
After a goalless first half, Real Madrid went out to break the deadlock from the very beginning of the second half and soon got its rewards. Pepe rose above everyone to head home a lofted free kick, which gave his side the win and in turn sees the Whites move to within three points of the league leaders. Ronaldo could have doubled the lead but was once again denied by the great reactions of Casilla.
