The 2-3 result between UD Almería and Valencia CF on the last day of the Liga BBVA left contrasting feelings at the Estadio Juegos del Meditteráneo. While the Andalusian side ended the season second last and relegated to the Liga Adelante for next year, Valencia exploded with joy as they fulfilled their objecting of sealing fourth place which means they will compete in the UEFA Champions League next season.

Aware that the entire season was at stake, both sides came out really energised right from the outset. Almería took the lead thanks to a great shot from a free kick by Thomas Partey that Bruno Alves was unable to stop. Valencia took twenty minutes to react, but got the equaliser with a great header by Nicolás Otamendi from a corner. Anxious to get the three points and remain in the Liga BBVA for another year, the Andalusian side went ahead again with a goal from Fernando Soriano, and they could have increased the lead with a later chance. However, Valencia fans were relieved to see their side equalise through Sofiane Feghouli from a corner just before the break.

In the second half, and with everything to play for, Almería were brave in their approach and had more attacks into their rival’s box but were unable to get the goal to secure safety. Álvaro Negredo has the clearest chance for Valencia, and although his shot went out, Paco Alcácer did not miss in a one-on-one that sealed fourth place for Nuno Espírito Santo’s men. Despite the initial ecstasy, Almería were unable to get out of the relegation zone, and the 2-3 result means they are in the Liga Adelante next season.
