The McDonald's Virtual LaLiga eSports competition kicked off on 19 March with a great number of competitors taking part in the first qualifying tournament. Over 5,000 gamers, featuring representatives from the eSports teams of the LaLiga Santander and LaLiga 1|2|3 clubs, entered the opening qualifier of a competition which will see one gamer crowned as Spain's top EA Sports FIFA player across the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One categories.
The first PlayStation 4 qualifying tournament got under way with seven rounds that featured a total of 4,080 games played on the ArenaGG gaming platform in best-of-three match-ups. JraLion10 and Ferperry successfully negotiated their way through the round-of-16, quarter-final and semi-final stages to secure their places in the grand final, where Ferperry claimed a 2-0 aggregate win.
In the Xbox One category, 496 games were played across the opening five rounds, followed by the round of 16, quarters and semis. The two finalists were SergioEspier and I 5 I zidane 10, with the latter prevailing in a 2-0 triumph.
The second online qualifying tournament got up and running on 24 March and continues on until the 28th. The third tournament will be held between 29 March and 2 April, with the final qualifying contest due to take place between 3 and 7 April. Each of these qualifying rounds will see the top 64 players awarded points, which will be distributed according to where they finish in the tournament standings.
The 32 PlayStation 4 and Xbox gamers - 16 per platform - with the highest tally of points in the online qualifying stage will clinch a place in the final phase, which will be played in person at the Liga de Videojuego Profesional (Professional Video Game League, LVP) venue in Barcelona.
The winning gamer from each platform will claim a spot in the EA Sports FIFA 18 Global Series. The winner of the aforementioned competition will then advance as the sole Spanish representative at the FIFA eWorld Cup, where the competitors will contest the right to be crowned as the best FIFA gamer on the planet.
