The crunch encounter at the Estadio de Gran Canaria between UD Las Palmas and R. Zaragoza, which will decide which of the two sides claims promotion to the Liga BBVA, will witness an individual duel in the two penalty boxes featuring Sergio Araujo and Willian José.
Both are key men for their clubs, if in different circumstances: Willian José assumed a significantly more prominent role for Zaragoza in the wake of Borja Bastón's injury, with the Brazilian taking over the goal-scoring mantle in his team-mate's absence; on the other hand, Araujo has been Las Palmas’ chief striker throughout the season.
Araujo it will be who is playing at home. The Argentinian has made 42 appearances this campaign, all as a starter, amassing a total of 3,566 minutes and scoring 23 times. Most of his goals – 20 – have come from inside the area. In terms of the way he has found the net, the Las Palmas man has hit 18 with his right foot and 4 with his left.
And Willian José will be at the other end. This term, the 23-year-old has played in 36 matches, 21 of which in the starting line-up, totalling 2,098 minutes. He has notched up 10 goals, three in the playoffs, with 9 arriving from inside the box. As far his method of scoring is concerned, he has netted 7 with his right foot and twice with his head.
Araujo has taken more shots this season than Willian José, and with greater accuracy. The Las Palmas forward has had 98 attempts, of which 59 (60%) have been on target, while the Zaragoza youngster is on 54, with 26 on the mark (48%). Araujo also boasts better figures on dribbles, having completed 42 of the 113 he has tried (37%). Willian José, meanwhile, has sought to run at the opposition on 31 occasions, and has been successful 12 times (38%).
As regards passes, the pair have similar statistics. Araujo has made 790, compared to the 752 of Willian José. Finally, the Zaragoza player leads the way in winning back possession, having done so 111 times to Araujo's 89.
There can be no doubt that goals will be key to tipping the scales one way or the other in this crucial clash. That's why the efforts of these two players, their respective teams' marksmen, will be pivotal towards determining which club will ply its trade in the Liga BBVA next season.
