The Liga Nacional de Futbol Professional (LaLiga) submitted a formal request to the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) yesterday calling on the latter to demand that UEFA, as the organising body of European competitions, ensure that the necessary measures are implemented to avoid a repeat of events like the ones that took place in connection with Tuesday's match between Real Madrid and Legia Warsaw. The away fans who had travelled to Madrid for this game were responsible for severe disturbances that left several National Police officers injured.
LaLiga has requested that when such incidents occur, the club whose fans were involved should be punished by having its ticket allocation (amounting to at least 5% of stadium capacity) taken away for its next away games.
These occurrences cannot be claimed to be isolated incidents, as similar scenes were seen yesterday in Vigo, where AFC Ajax supporters clashed with the National Police prior to their club's UEFA Europa League meeting with RC Celta. Furthermore, the deplorable acts perpetrated by the PSV Eindhoven fans in Madrid's Plaza Mayor in March this year, in the hours leading up to their team's UEFA Champions League encounter against Atletico Madrid, should also not be forgotten.
Spanish football – and specifically LaLiga, its member clubs and public limited sports companies (SADs), and their fans – works hand in hand with Spain's security forces and numerous bodies including the State Commission against Violence, Racism, Xenophobia and Intolerance in Sport with the aim of stamping out such behaviour. Accordingly, it cannot stand idly by when incidents like the ones described above occur.
LaLiga has also sent a separate statement to the UEFA president appealing to him to ensure that adequate measures are in place to avoid such events.
