Although Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid held each other to a scoreless draw in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie, the Vicente Calderón was still treated to a thrilling game filled with chances on goal.
Los blancos were out to get their opponents in the first half and produced the lion's share of the best goalscoring opportunities during the game. Gareth Bale, in the fourth minute, was the first to test out an inspired Jan Oblak, who looked extremely assured between the sticks and later on went on to deny Luka Modrić, James Rodríguez and Karim Benzema. Atlético looked to alleviate the pressure they were under by causing Real Madrid damage from dead ball situations and by exploiting Griezmann's pace. The Frenchman had the only chance on goal for the rojiblancos before the half time break.
Diego Simeone's players looked better in the second half and began to dominate the game. The home side were particular incisive on the right wing after the restart and had the Real Madrid defence on the back foot, however, they were unable to break the deadlock despite their final push up front during the dying minutes. This result means the tie remains still wide open and will have to be decided in the Santiago Bernabéu on 22 April.
