A manager is defined by the footballing style he imposes on the pitch. And as such, Paco Jémez (Rayo Vallecano), Ernesto Valverde (Athletic Club) and Diego Simeone (Atlético Madrid) have stood out, and are therefore nominated for the 'Best Coach in the 2013/14 Liga BBVA' Award which will be presented at the '2014 Awards Ceremony' on 27 October.
Paco Jémez is one of the most admired coaches in the league. His side's good play, implemented by the Canary Islander is surprising, and makes perfect viewing for footballing purists. They play out from the back, something Jémez insists on, and he has turned one of the division’s most humble sides into one that always puts on a spectacle.
The methodology of a local manager such as Ernesto Valverde can be seen at Athletic Club, who finished fourth and qualified for the UEFA Champions League. This is an achievement that Valverde, who was born in Extremadura but grew up in Basque football, understands more than most. The side’s excellent season shows the intelligence of an experienced coach.
Diego Simeone was one of the main protagonists in Atlético Madrid's first Liga BBVA title in 18 years. His spirit and character are ingrained into the Rojiblanca shirt and he helped lift his players to the top of Spanish football. The success enjoyed by the Madrid side in recent years can be directly linked to the Argentine’s presence.
