With matchday 31 of Liga BBVA almost over, we review the highlights of the weekend. Sevilla FC continue their unbeaten run at the Sánchez Pizjuán, and have made things interesting up top after securing a draw with FC Barcelona. One of Saturday’s protagonists was Santi Mina, the youngster who scored four goals for Celta in their 6-1 hammering of Rayo Vallecano. Meanwhile, in the race for survival, Elche and Almería secured much-needed wins.
Sevilla continue unbeaten at home
Unai Emery’s side showed once again that their impressive home form is no coincidence. On this occasion, against the league leaders Barcelona, they found themselves 0-2 down. However, the Andalusian outfit managed to secure a 2-2 draw thanks to a Kevin Gameiro strike, keeping up their record as the only Liga BBVA outfit unbeaten at home this season; winning 11 and drawing five of their games at the Sánchez Pizjuán.
A bonkers game at Balaídos
Celta Vigo impressed as they downed Rayo Vallecano 6-1. Santi Mina stood out with four goals, helping his side up to 10th in the standings. Also, the Celta forward became the youngest player to score four in the same game in the last 80 years, aged 19 and 125 days.
Elche and Almería breathe again
The bottom of the table saw a number of clashes between direct rivals. Elche were able to record an invaluable 0-2 win over Córdoba CF that sees them climb to 15th on 31 points, four above third bottom Levante. Meanwhile, Almería downed Granada 3-0 in a classic ‘six pointer’. The Rojiblancos not only managed to improve their goal average over Granada, but also moved four points above their Andalusian rivals in the table.
