The cream of the crop from the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) have arrived in Valencia ahead of their LaLiga World clash against Los Che on 10 August. The All-Star squad were greeted upon their arrival at Madrid's Adolfo Suarez airport by Vicente Casado, LaLiga's managing director of international development. The Nigerian expedition is headed up by Shehu Dikko, chairman of Nigeria's League Management Company (LMC) and the organisation's CEO, Nduka Irabor. As Dikko commented upon the party's arrival in Valencia: "LaLiga has massive numbers of followers in Nigeria and it's very important that we're being offered this sort of opportunity."
In addition, MFM FC’s central midfielder Ifeanyi Ifeanyi expressed his satisfaction at being able to show his skills in front of the Spanish public. "They can also learn from us because we have our own style of play and footballing culture," Ifeanyi noted.
The group, consisting of 25 players from the Nigerian league, landed in Madrid and then headed over to Valencia by train. One of the highlights of their Spanish sojourn is a fixture against Pako Ayestaran’s side at the Estadio Luis Suñer Pico, located south of Valencia in the town of Alzira. The encounter will take place on the 10 August at 21:30, and the match revenue will be used to raise funds to help the municipalities in the Valencia region who suffered from forest fires in June.
Following the match against Valencia, the All-Star Nigerian side will head to Cadiz for the second part of their Spanish adventure. They will take part in the prestigious Ramon de Carranza trophy against Malaga CF in the semi-finals, while on the other side of the draw, Cadiz CF face Atletico Madrid.
