Athletic Club beat Málaga CF in the match that closed out matchday fourteen of the Liga BBVA. Despite the fact that youth team player Juanmi Jiménez had to be called up by Bernd Schuster, the Basque team mounted a comeback thanks to goals from Mikel San José and Iker Muniain in the second half.
In an intense first half both teams demonstrated their desire win. The visitors were the first to fire a warning shot, with a header from forward Guillermo Fernández that the blanquiazul defence managed to clear off the line. However, the Andalusian outfit dominated the dying minutes of the first half and, after a clear opportunity from Vitorino Antunes, a wonderful header from Juanmi found its way into the top corner of Gorka Iraizoz's goal.
After the break, Athletic were intent on finding an equaliser and they got their just deserts in the 68th minute when San José redirected a corner to beat Willy Caballero and make it 1-1. After Francisco Portillo was sent off for Málaga, Ernesto Valverde's men took control and ended up stealing all three points with a goal from Muniain with five minutes left to play.
