It was a mixed bag for Spain's two representatives in Wednesday's UEFA Champions League clashes . Real Madrid CF beat Juventus 2-1 in a passionate match between two giants of European football. Real Sociedad de Fútbol, however, were beaten away at Old Trafford.

Cristiano Ronaldo was the star in the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu as he scored both goals in a victory that means Real Madrid has one foot in the knock-out stages after just three matches. Things could not have started better for the Whites, who went ahead after just 4 minutes with a strike from the Portuguese forward. Juventus, however, were not about to give up without a fight and drew level through Spanish player Fernando Llorente with 22 minutes on the clock. Seven minutes later Real Madrid responded and sealed the 2-1 final score from the penalty spot after a foul from Giorgio Chiellini, who was sent off for his offence on Sergio Ramos. In the other Group B match Galatasaray AŞ breezed past FC København.

It was a different story for Real Sociedad, who now have an uphill struggle among Europe's elite as they lost their third Group A match, this time to Manchester United FC at Old Trafford. Iñigo Martínez's own goal in the second minute of the match handed United three points on a plate and made the rest of the match difficult for Real, whose search for a draw led to two shots against the woodwork from Antoine Griezmann and Alberto de la Bella. In the group's other match, Bayer 04 Leverkusen hammered FC Shakhtar Donetsk 4-0.
