With the curtains now down on LaLiga Santander Matchday 16, it is time to take a look at the LaLiga Fantasy MARCA Matchday 16 Best XI.
The XI for this matchday has a significant contingent of FC Barcelona players, the Catalan club contributing a total of three. They include the Player of the Matchday, Lionel Messi, who takes the crown for the third time this season.
Keeping goal in this week's Best XI is the Villarreal shotstopper Sergio Asenjo, staking his claim with 11 saves – one from the penalty spot – in his side's 2-2 draw against SD Huesca to put him on a total of 17 points.
Gerard Pique is the highest-ranked defender of the matchday. The Barcelona centre-back found the back of the net in the Catalan side's 5-0 demolition of Levante UD to claim a total of 16 points. He is accompanied in the defensive line by Dimitrios Siovas (14 points), Unai Bustinza (11) and two Getafe CF players, Vitorino Antunes and Leandro Cabrera (11 points apiece).
The middle of the park is mostly made up of Sevilla FC players following a solid 2-0 home victory over Girona FC. Pablo Sarabia (14 points) and Ever Banega (12) were the two goalscorers, earning them their places in the Best XI of the matchday. They line up alongside Sergio Busquets (12 points), who also played a blinder during Barça's trip to Valencia.
The front line features two time-tested LaLiga Santander stars. Messi makes an explosive entrance into the Best XI of the week as the Player of the Matchday for an amazing third time this season thanks to his breathtaking performance against Levante with three goals and two assists. He is partnered in attack by Antoine Griezmann (17 points), the author of a brace which helped Atletico Madrid complete a hard-fought 3-2 win over R. Valladolid CF.
