The Liga Adelante has always been a competition renowned for the excitement it generates, and the penultimate matchday of the season proved why. With teams fighting on three fronts, the tension could be cut with a knife. With just one week to go, Girona FC and R. Sporting are still battling it out for the second automatic promotion spot, R. Zaragoza and SD Ponferradina are chasing the final play-off place, and R. Racing C. and At. Osasuna are fighting to avoid relegation.

A vibrant chase to reach the Liga BBVA
Girona FC and R. Sporting are still playing out an exciting race for second place.
The Catalan outfit had to struggle a lot in the Iberostar Estadio to beat RCD Mallorca 1-0. With 10 men on the pitch, Pablo Machín’s side brought home the bacon thanks to a late goal from Fran Sandaza, which keeps them two points above Sporting.

The Gijón side meanwhile had a somewhat more comfortable victory. Abelardo Fernández’s side beat CE Sabadell 2-0 thanks to goals by Carlos Castro and Nacho Cases and were just one goal away from going second until Sandaza scored for Girona. Sabadell, meanwhile, were condemned to relegation in El Molinón.

Two challengers for one play-off place
R. Zaragoza and SD Ponferradina continue their fight for the play-offs. The Zaragoza outfit lost 2-0 at La Romareda to UD Las Palmas thanks to goals by Sergio Araujo and Jonathan Viera.

Thanks to this victory, the Canary Islanders wrap up fourth place, allowing them to play the second leg of their play-off tie at home.

Meanwhile, Zaragoza stay sixth, one point above Ponferradina, who beat R. Racing Club 1-0 at El Sardinero to move closer to the play-offs. R. Valladolid beat D. Alavés 2-0 at Mendizorroza but are unable to improve on their place in the league table and are guaranteed to finish fifth.

The race for survival remains tight as ever
The fight for survival on the final day of the season is going to be very exciting. CD Tenerife can breathe easier after beating Real Betis 2-0 thanks to goals from Suso Santana and Diego Ifrán which saw them clinch survival. On the other hand, CE Sabadell, RC Recreativo and FC Barcelona B were not able to avoid relegation and are now Segunda División B sides.

The final relegation place will be contested between At. Osasuna and R. Racing C. The Navarrans beat Recreativo 2-0 and are three points above the Santander side, but they have an inferior head-to-head record. The Cantabrians lost 1-0 to Ponferradina and are currently 19th, meaning they will go down next week unless they win and Osasuna lose.
