Midfielder Marco Asensio (Palma de Mallorca, 21 January 1996) has been named Best Newcomer in LaLiga Santander 2015/16.
A product of the RCD Mallorca academy, Asensio shone for the club in LaLiga 1|2|3 and attracted interest from Real Madrid, who signed him as an 18-year-old. He spent last season on loan at RCD Espanyol, where he had an outstanding debut campaign in LaLiga Santander.
Far from being fazed by the step up to Spain's top flight, Asensio surprised everyone from the start with his confidence and skill and ended the season as one of Espanyol's standout players. The Mallorca-born midfielder made 34 appearances, scored four goals and set up no fewer than 10, enough to make him one of LaLiga Santander's top 10 players in terms of assists.
At the end of his loan spell at Espanyol, Real Madrid decided to keep hold of their player and Zinedine Zidane has given him his full backing in the early stages of the season, something which Asensio has repaid with some assured performances and by swiftly hitting his goalscoring stride for Los Blancos. The midfielder has graduated from being a young promise and is now a fully fledged star of Spanish football.
