Carlos Marchena, who is enjoying his second season at the Galician side, is a spiritual leader at RC Deportivo de la Coruña. With that, the defender now has a clear objective: secure promotion to Liga BBVA.
Statistics back this up. The side have only lost once this season, in the Copa del Rey against Real Jaén, with the defender in the side. The results in Liga Adelante are even better, given that in the five matches that Marchena has played (AD Alcorcón, FC Barcelona B, Real Madrid Castilla, RC Recreativo de Huelva and RCD Mallorca) they have come away victorious.
If these matches are added to the games played towards the end of last season, that run extends to nine consecutive league victories for the blue and white's player. This lucky charm also comes with the added bonus of goals, with the towering centre back having found the net four times in 29 games. It seems at the moment the 34 year old can do no wrong.
On Saturday the defender will take to the pitch at El Toralín, looking to add to these positive statistics. Fernando Vázquez's side will aim to take three points from SD Ponferradina as they look to consolidate their second place in Liga Adelante behind leaders Recreativo de Huelva.
