Having broken Telmo Zarra’s record, Leo Messi will add to his roster of personal achievements with a trophy from the LFP recognising him as top goal scorer in Spanish League history.
In the run up to Barcelona’s home match against Atlético Madrid (January 11th, 21:00), tribute will be paid to Messi’s 253 goals. He reached the figure in November with his hat-trick at the Sánchez Pizjuán, overtaking Zarra’s 251, a record that had stood since 1955.
The Camp Nou will be the scene for Messi’s latest award. The Argentine has in his career notched up the following honours:
- three times top scorer in La Liga BBVA (2010, 2012, 2013)
- first player to score in every a complete round robin of matches (30 goals scored between matchday 22 and matchday 29 in the 2012/13 season)
- scorer of Barcelona’s 5,000th goal (in the away match at Racing Santander, February 2009)
Messi will be handed the award by Carles Rexach, a key figure in his career in being the man to have brought him into Barcelona’s youth system, La Masia, at the age of twelve.
